When connecting your TomTom Rider 40/400/500/550 to your computer to transfer a route, you need to enable the communication mode on the GPS. The TomTom Rider can only receive route files if the communication mode is enabled. This FAQ will guide how to enable the communication mode. - Connect the computer and TomTom Rider with a USB cable. The Rider will start up.
- When the Rider is connected to the PC, this screen will appear. Push "Import routes".

Manual transfer of routes to your TomTom Rider is described in a few steps. - Download the tour to your computer
First you need to select on www.tourstart.org the tours you want to download. Once you have found the tour(s) you want to download, you can proceed with: -Click on the transfer icon in the header on www.tourstart.org -Select the route(s) to download -Open "More options" -Click on the TomTom icon. Now the download will automatically start. - Connect your TomTom and press on the "Import routes"
- Find the route on your computer
Typically the downloaded GPS files are in the "Download" folder on your computer unless you have chosen another file destination. -Find the route file

The settings on the GPS device used shall always be "Fastest route" type. Here is the explanation. When a route on Tourstart.org is to be calculated between two points, a standard algorithm is used. Highlight Unpaved Roads When planning a motorcycle route it is essential to know the road conditions. By choosing the option of having the unpaved roads shown, you can see which of the roads are unpaved. Hereby you can actively decide whether you prefer to keep the route on the unpaved road, or you prefer the tarmac roads. The route on www.tourstart.org is normally purple. When highlighting the unpaved roads, the part of the road is marked red. Then you can clearly see the specific road condition. Shaping point When making a route on Tourstart it is done by adding start, via/drag and end points on the map. Between those points a route is made. When transferring the route to a Garmin, TomTom or any other motorcycle gps, the route is basically some points. Then the gps will automatically calculate a route between the points. There are situations where there is a difference between the route on Tourstart and on the GPS. This is due to the calculation formula is almost the same on e.g. Garmin, TomTom and Tourstart, but with smaller variations. To ensure the route is as similar as possible Tourstart has developed an intelligent mechanism to add Shaping Points. The shaping points are dark blue/light blue.
