OVERVIEW
This ride runs down the less-explored side
of the Sierra Nevada. The altitude and
temperature change a lot over the course
of the route, from sea level to 8,650 feet,
and from 35 degrees to 95 when we did it
in May. Best time of the year to do the ride
is in June.
From coastal plain to mountain passes
to desert and winding river gorges, this
route has it all. Although many of the
other mountain passes are closed during
winter, Carson Pass is normally kept open.
However, it can be treacherous in the winter
months. If the weather is good enough, it’s a
better idea to use the Tioga Pass (the highest in California) and go through Yosemite
National Park.
